WHAT IS
THE WISH EFFECT
The story of Make-A-Wish began in 1980 after a team of people who came together to help grant the wish of a little boy whose dream was to be a policeman. Inspired and moved by the power of a wish to transform lives, the people involved in his wish pledged to continue to “share the power of a wish”.
This is the multiplier effect of wishes to uplift and transform the lives of every eligible child, their families and the wider community.
A wish granted is a gift of hope and strength for children with critical illnesses. At the same time, its positive impact can radiate and uplift their families and the community around them, creating treasured memories that will last a lifetime. A wish journey creates life-changing moments that will last a lifetime for children with critical illnesses, their families and the community. It is a carefully planned journey, designed to complement a child’s medical treatment and long-term well-being.
A GIFT OF HOPE & STRENGTH
A wish fulfilled grants children the emotional and psychological benefits they need to fight their critical illness. For some, it is often the turning point in their treatment as it can greatly improve their quality of life and produce better health outcomes. Majority of Make-A-Wish children go on to learn to cope with and even beat their illnesses.

The positive impact of a wish radiates and touches the lives of children with critical illnesses, their families and the entire community. It takes a village or a ‘wish force’ to raise a child and everyone involved – their families, volunteers, supporters, medical professionals and entire communities – are all touched by the child’s happiness and hope from having their wishes
