Ezri's wish
I wish to be a ballerina
Ezri's
WISH STORY
8-year-old Ezri was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia four years ago and one of the things that kept her going through the many medical procedures was the times she played dress-up as a ballerina, twirling and dancing in tutus with her sister Ivee.
Ezri’s wish was to become a ballerina and perform both a ballet duet with her sister and a solo ballet dance in front of her family and friends. Her ballet teacher, Ms Viv, who had been coaching her for two years, was instrumental in helping Ezri prepare for her wish day. Weeks leading up to her wish day, Ezri ramped up rehearsals and private practices at home, and also sent out customised invitations to her guests.
On her wish day, Ezri and her family had an exclusive, behind-the-scenes tour at the Singapore Dance Theatre, before getting ready for her dance performances. The backstage tour was very inspiring to Ezri and gave her a glimpse into the life of a professional ballerina. Ms Viv helped Ezri and Ivee get ready with their stage make-up and hair before donning exquisite and dazzling ballerina dresses, gifted by a friend.
Ezri and Ivee first performed a duet titled, Enchanted Garden, choreographed by Ms Viv, which showcases the sisters as fairies in the garden picking flowers. The solo performance by Ezri was a little excerpt from the repertoire, The Sleeping Beauty Act III, with Ezri taking on the role of the Crystal Fountain Fairy who gives the gift of purity, honesty, sincerity, and integrity to Sleeping Beauty.
At the end of the wish day, the family had a symbolic ritual with Ezri throwing away the cup that was used to hold the chemotherapy medicine, to symbolise her readiness to move forward into the future as the new Ezri - brave, courageous, and resilient, emerging stronger from what she has been through.
